The following should come as no surprise to those of you that have read some of my other reviews: To me, terms like "Combat", or "Self-Defense" in connection with judo really means that it is some form of ju jitsu. This holds true even here in: "Combat Judo Made easy" by Claude St. Denise.

I have not the slightest idea about who the author here might be, other than the fact that he was/is a "world-renowned expert". It says so on the cover, so that makes it official, doesn't it? The name kind of reminds me about Rue St. Denise in Paris (oui, oui, mon cherie!). Not the place to look for martial arts for sure! On second thought you may end up watching some brawls and fights - I guess that is close enough? :-)

Confused? So am I after reading this book! It is devided into two parts. The first part of the book is straight ahead judo nage-waza (throws). The second part, the self-defense, shows ju jitsu (or "Judo-Jujitsu Self Defense" as it's being termed by our friend the author). You are thrown (pun intended) straight into the second part without any bridge what-so-ever leading from the first part. While the first half of the book is about throws, only half of those are in use during the self-defense part. That wouldn't be too bad in itself if it wasn't for the strange fact that you'll find a number of other throws and takedowns that are not being shown in the first part! Maybe our guy has spent too much time in Saint Denise after all?

I can't say too much about the judo part - it looks quite ok to me. Each of the throws are shown in clear and concise manner, using drawings. The self-defense techniques are equally presented with several drawings per technique. The chosen methods in this part of the books are so-so (just like Rue Saint Denise...). Some are ok, and some are good. Others I would be happy not to comment on.

As a teaching manual this is way off target. It is kind of being two books in one - two that doesn't fit together, that is. But again, you will need everything that is possibly issued about the totally confusing art of "ju-do-jitsu-jutsu-jiu-do"! If you don't have it you can't rest peacefully!
